Paychex vs Gusto (2026): Quote-Only Service vs Posted-Price Payroll

Gusto is the better buy for most small US teams: payroll and benefits from $49 a month plus $6 a person, with published prices and a 4.7 ease-of-use score. Paychex is the one to quote when you want a service-led provider with HR tools and a PEO you can move up to.

HRS score is our editorial rating from the full Paychex review and Gusto review. Each product is scored on eight parameters, and the two sets differ slightly.

The core difference: a service-led provider or a self-serve one

Paychex sells four payroll packages named Basic, Foundations, Advanced and Complete, plus HR Pro, a non-PEO option with a dedicated HR professional, and an HR PEO that adds co-employment. Every package is a quote, so the usual route is a sales call, a setup fee and a one-year agreement if you take the free-months offer.

Gusto is software you run yourself. You stay the sole employer while it runs payroll, files taxes and sets up health insurance and a 401(k), and the plan you pick sets the price. It can pay contractors in 120+ countries but cannot employ staff abroad. The gap is less about features than about how you buy.

Paychex: payroll first, PEO when you need it

Your company Paychex Payroll first, PEO optional Payroll HR Pro HR PEO
Strongest when you want a staged path and HR compliance tools. Weakest on price visibility, support and a thin integration catalog.

Gusto: US payroll with benefits attached

Your company Gusto US payroll, benefits, HR US staff Benefits Contractors
Strongest for US teams that want simple, cheap payroll. Weakest once you need co-employment or employees abroad.

Paychex vs Gusto pricing, and what you actually pay

Gusto charges a monthly base fee plus a per-person fee: $49 + $6 on Simple, $80 + $12 on Plus and $180 + $22 on Premium. Paychex publishes no rate. It quotes every package, and its pricing pages point visitors to a sales contact.

That makes the comparison lopsided. You can total Gusto’s bill from its page, but a Paychex bill depends on the package, headcount, setup fee and add-ons it quotes you. Paychex also runs limited free-months offers for new clients, which can change the first-year cost but not the underlying rate.

Setup fee

Paychex: a setup fee applies and the amount is set in your quote.

Gusto: not itemised in our review.

One-time and add-on fees

Paychex: NSF, delivery and premium processing fees can apply, and time tracking and 401(k) are billed outside payroll.

Gusto: Priority Support $30 + $3 per person, Business Compliance $85 per state, same-day pay $90 per payroll.

Workers’ comp and insurance

Paychex: health, dental, vision and workers’ comp through its own agency; premiums and rates are not published.

Gusto: workers’ comp from $14 a month; no Gusto admin fee on health insurance, but premiums are extra.

Payroll taxes

Paychex: calculates, files and pays payroll taxes for you.

Gusto: taxes are filed automatically and paid by you.

Plan limits

Paychex: best fit is about 20 to 250 staff; under 10 employees it is a weaker fit.

Gusto: no minimum headcount on Simple, but multi-state payroll needs Plus.

Contract length

Paychex: no standard minimum is published. The free-months offer needs a one-year agreement and can be recovered on early exit.

Gusto: month to month. Cancelling mid-month bills the full month.

Price changes

Paychex: no price-increase cap or notice period is published.

Gusto: 30 days’ notice before fee changes.

Free trial

Neither advertises a free trial. Paychex runs limited free-months promotions for new clients instead.

Gusto

Paychex publishes no rate, so its field starts at an arbitrary $15 only so the chart works. It is not a quote or an estimate; replace it with the amount you are offered. Gusto starts at Plus; try Simple at $49 and $6 or Premium at $180 and $22. Its total includes the monthly base fee.

Feature comparison

Paychex’s lead is depth around the edges: HR compliance tools, in-house retirement and insurance, and a PEO option. Gusto’s lead is the everyday tooling: low price, easy setup, a large app directory and cheap contractor payments. Expand a group to see the detail; “Leads” marks the stronger product on that row.

Implementation and support

Neither is strong here. Gusto scores 3.6 of 5 for support and Paychex 3.5, and public reviews of both mention escalation problems. Setup is where they split: Gusto is self-serve, and Paychex is a sales-led onboarding with a setup fee.

Which one to pick for your situation

These are the four buying situations we see most often for this pair. Whether you want to run payroll yourself or lean on a provider decides most of them.

US shop with 15 hourly employees in one state

15 employees1 stateBudget-led

Gusto Simple costs $49 plus $6 a person, about $1,670 a year for fifteen people, and you can see it before you talk to anyone. Paychex needs a quote, a setup fee and, with its offer, a one-year agreement.

Pick Gusto

Company of 80 that wants HR compliance tools and a PEO option

80 employees3 statesPEO maybe next year

Paychex gives you handbooks, labor law posters, OSHA and EEO-1 reporting, and an HR PEO to move up to without changing vendor. Gusto’s HR guidance sits on Premium and it has no PEO. Get a written Paychex quote and compare it with Gusto Premium at $180 plus $22.

Pick Paychex

US company paying 25 contractors abroad each month

20 US employees25 contractorsPaid monthly

Gusto charges $5 a payment, about $1,500 a year for twenty-five contractors before FX. Paychex lists no international contractor payments. Gusto is far easier to budget.

Pick Gusto

Finance team that needs ISO and SOC reports on file

120 employeesVendor questionnaireAudit pending

Paychex lists SOC 1 Type 2, SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001. Gusto lists SOC 1 and SOC 2 reports and AES-256 at rest but no ISO certificate. If ISO matters to your questionnaire, Paychex has the edge.

Pick Paychex

Where each one falls short

These are the limitations that matter in this specific matchup. The full pros and cons for each product live on its review page.

Paychex

  • No visible priceEvery package is a quote, and the setup fee, billing unit and exit terms are not published.
  • Support complaintsSupport scores 3.5 of 5, and reviewers describe holds, unexpected fees and difficulty closing accounts.
  • Thin integration catalogThe page claims 15 featured integrations but shows 12, which is limiting if you use niche tools.

Gusto

  • US employees onlyIt cannot employ or run payroll for anyone abroad, which ends its usefulness once you hire internationally.
  • Hard escalationSupport scores 3.6 of 5, callbacks run on weekdays only, and reviewers describe dead ends on complex issues.
  • Add-ons stackMulti-state needs Plus, and compliance, faster pay and support are priced separately, so the bill can climb past the headline.

What users say about Paychex and Gusto

Our Gusto review analyses 20,352 public reviews and our Paychex review analyses 4,430. Gusto averages 4.3 out of 5 and Paychex a weighted 3.7, so Gusto has a larger, happier sample.

Paychex

Based on 4,430 public reviews, weighted average 3.7 out of 5

  • Rigid reporting. A thin mobile app too.
  • Tax and deposit errors. Delayed direct deposits and filing mistakes appear in reviews.

Two review platforms rate Gusto 4.6, while a third with 2,544 reviews rates it 1.9. We weight the larger, verified sources more and still flag the gap.

Switching between Paychex and Gusto

Moving between two payroll providers is easiest at the start of a quarter or a calendar year, so tax forms and year-to-date totals stay in one place. Ask the new provider whether it accepts year-to-date payroll history, and keep the old account open until the first payroll runs clean.

Paychex to Gusto

Moderate effort
  1. Check the Paychex agreement for the term and any recovery of free months.
  2. Export payroll history, tax filings and reports before access ends.
  3. Move 401(k) and insurance plans, since Paychex runs them through its own agency.
  4. Pick the Gusto plan that covers your states; multi-state payroll needs Plus.

Gusto to Paychex

Moderate effort
  1. Get a written Paychex quote that lists the package, setup fee and add-ons.
  2. Export payroll history, tax filings and benefits enrolments from Gusto.
  3. Cancel before a month starts, since Gusto bills the full month if you cancel mid-month.
  4. Decide up front whether you want HR Pro or the HR PEO, because that changes the contract.

If neither fits: three alternatives

If you want a PEO with a published entry price, or a similar low-cost payroll tool, these three are the usual next looks. Our payroll software ranking compares more options. Prices below come from each vendor’s own pages or our reviews, checked in November 2026.

Final verdict

Gusto is the better buy for most small US teams. Paychex is the one to quote for HR depth and a PEO path.

If every employee is in the US and you want payroll, benefits and tax filing at a visible price, Gusto does it from $49 a month plus $6 a person and scores 4.7 of 5 for ease of use. Its limits are US-only employees, weekday support and add-ons that stack. Paychex suits teams of about 20 to 250 that want HR compliance tools, in-house retirement and insurance, and a route into a PEO. Its limits are the missing price, a 3.5 support score and billing complaints. Get a written Paychex quote before you decide.

Paychex vs Gusto: FAQs

Is Paychex cheaper than Gusto?

Almost certainly not, but Paychex publishes no price, so it cannot be confirmed. Gusto Simple is $49 a month plus $6 per person and Plus is $80 plus $12. Paychex quotes every package, and its free-months offers only change the first year.

Does Paychex publish its prices?

No. Paychex sends visitors to a sales contact and does not publish a starting price, a billing unit or a setup fee. Gusto posts all three plans on its pricing page.

Is Paychex a PEO and is Gusto?

Paychex offers an HR PEO package that adds co-employment, plus HR Pro as a non-PEO option. Gusto is not a PEO, so you stay the sole employer. If you want a PEO with a published entry price, Justworks Basic is $79 per employee.

Can either hire employees outside the US?

Neither can. Paychex describes itself as a US provider and lists no international service. Gusto can pay contractors in 120+ countries at $5 per payment plus FX, but it cannot employ people abroad.

Which is better for a small business?

Gusto, for most. It has published prices, scores 4.7 of 5 on ease of use and has no minimum headcount on Simple. Paychex says its best fit is about 20 to 250 employees and a weaker fit under 10.

Which has better support?

Neither stands out. Paychex scores 3.5 of 5 and lists phone, chat and email without hours. Gusto scores 3.6, with chat from 5am to 5pm Pacific on weekdays and callbacks on weekdays only. Both draw complaints about escalation.

Do Paychex and Gusto require long contracts?

Paychex publishes no standard minimum term, but its free-months offer needs a one-year agreement and the value can be recovered if you leave early. Gusto bills month to month, though cancelling mid-month bills the full month.

Which integrates with more tools?

Gusto. It lists 153 apps in its directory, including QuickBooks, Xero and Homebase, though its help centre cites about 112. Paychex features 15 integrations but shows 12 logos, and names QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Xero and NetSuite.
