Paychex vs TriNet (2026): Payroll-First vs PEO-First, Both Quote Only

Neither publishes a price. Paychex starts from payroll and lets you grow into a PEO, with SOC and ISO reports on file. TriNet is a PEO first, with HR advisers and a route to hire abroad through Multiplier. Our scores tie at 4.0, so structure decides it.

Quick answer

Paychex or TriNet: which should you choose?

Choose Paychex if you want payroll and tax filing first, with a PEO or an HR adviser you can add later, from a vendor with SOC and ISO reports on file. Choose TriNet if you want a co-employment PEO from day one, with HR advisers and a partner route to hire abroad. Both are quote only, so neither wins on price transparency.

Verdict from HR Stacks editors, based on vendor pricing pages and both full reviews.

HRS score is our editorial rating from the full Paychex review and TriNet review. Each product is scored on eight parameters, and the two sets differ slightly because TriNet is scored on global coverage.

The core difference: payroll first or PEO first

Paychex sells four payroll packages named Basic, Foundations, Advanced and Complete. On top of those it offers HR Pro, a non-PEO option with a dedicated HR professional, and an HR PEO that adds co-employment. You can start with payroll and move up without changing vendor. It says it pays about one in eleven US private sector workers.

TriNet starts at the PEO. It becomes a co-employer, runs payroll and benefits, and gives you HR advisers, a managed 401(k) and risk services for a quoted monthly fee per employee. Its own FAQ says it mainly serves mid-sized companies, and our review warns that small teams with simple needs may find it expensive.

Paychex: payroll first, PEO when you need it

Your company Paychex Payroll first, PEO optional Payroll HR Pro HR PEO
Strongest when you want a staged path and proof of controls. Weakest on price visibility, support and a thin integration catalog.

TriNet: a full-service PEO with advisers

Your company TriNet PEO Payroll, benefits, HR advice US staff HR advisers Multiplier
Strongest when you want co-employment and HR advice from the start. Weakest on price visibility, integrations and customisation.

Paychex vs TriNet pricing, and what you actually pay

Neither vendor publishes a rate. Paychex quotes every package, and its pricing pages point visitors to a sales contact. TriNet says it does not publish standard list pricing and charges a flat fee per employee per month, never a percentage of payroll, set by your size, industry, location and scope of services.

The two quotes also cover different things. A Paychex payroll package prices payroll, tax filing and HR tools, while its HR PEO prices co-employment on top. TriNet’s fee is a PEO fee throughout. TriNet’s own FAQ uses $150 per employee per month as an example, which it states is not a TriNet rate. Paychex gives no equivalent figure.

Paychex: health, dental, vision and workers’ comp through its own agency; premiums are extra.

TriNet: manages the policy and claims process; the rate is not published.

Paychex: calculates, files and pays payroll taxes for you.

TriNet: employer FICA, FUTA and SUTA are passed through as estimates on a line-item invoice.

TriNet: requires a minimum number of worksite employees but does not state it.

TriNet: says most contracts have flexible terms with no long-term commitment. Renewal and exit terms are not published.

Price changes

Paychex: no price-increase cap or notice period is published.

TriNet: the fee varies with headcount, including seasonal staff.

Free trial

Neither advertises a free trial. Paychex runs limited free-months promotions for new clients instead.

Which one to pick for your situation

These are the four buying situations we see most often for this pair. Whether you want to start with payroll or with a co-employer decides most of them.

US company with 40 employees that wants payroll now and a PEO later

40 employees2 statesPEO maybe in a year

Paychex lets you start on a payroll package and move to its HR PEO without changing vendor. TriNet only makes sense if you already want co-employment. Get both quotes in writing and compare the payroll-only version with the PEO version.

Pick Paychex

Mid-sized employer wanting a co-employer and HR advisers

150 employeesSeveral US statesNo HR team

This is the buyer TriNet describes. Advisers, a managed 401(k), claims handling and risk services come with the relationship. Paychex can do this through its HR PEO, but its public reviews mention more billing and support complaints.

Pick TriNet

Finance team that needs security reports for a vendor review

80 employeesVendor questionnaireAudit pending

Paychex lists SOC 1 Type 2, SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001, which shortens a vendor review. TriNet lists no certification in our review, so ask it for its current reports before you rely on it.

Pick Paychex

US company wanting a PEO and a route to hire abroad

60 employeesMulti-stateHiring abroad soon

TriNet can co-employ the US team and reach other countries through Multiplier, under separate fees. Paychex lists no international service, so you would need a second vendor for anyone outside the US.

Pick TriNet

Where each one falls short

These are the limitations that matter in this specific matchup. The full pros and cons for each product live on its review page.

Paychex

  • No visible priceEvery package is a quote, and the setup fee, billing unit and exit terms are not published.
  • Support complaintsSupport scores 3.5 of 5, and reviewers describe holds, unexpected fees and difficulty closing accounts.
  • Thin integration catalogThe page claims 15 featured integrations but shows 12, which is limiting if you use niche tools.

TriNet

  • No visible priceEvery number comes from a sales process, and the minimum headcount is not stated.
  • Higher cost than standalone toolsOur review lists cost above standalone services as a main con, and on-demand consulting costs extra.
  • Limited customisationStandard plans offer little customisation, and the learning curve is early and steep.

What users say about Paychex and TriNet

Our Paychex review analyses 4,430 public reviews with a weighted average of 3.7 out of 5. Our TriNet review gives sentiment scores but no review count, so we do not quote a sample size for it. Read the TriNet themes as editorial findings, not a tally.

Paychex

Based on 4,430 public reviews, weighted average 3.7 out of 5

Praised for

  • Easy new hire entry. Reviewers like the speed of adding people.
  • Named reps. A dedicated contact is valued when it works.
  • Filings handled for you. Taxes are filed without prompting.

Criticised for

  • Support holds. Long waits are the most repeated complaint.
  • Unexpected fees. Billing surprises appear often.
  • Glitches and lockouts. Slowdowns, login problems and hard account closure.

Two larger review platforms rate Paychex about 4.1 to 4.2, while a third with 858 reviews rates it 1.7. We weight the larger, verified sources more and still flag the gap.

TriNet

Sentiment from our review: features 92 percent, value 92, ease of use 90, support 90

Praised for

  • Access to HR advisers. Reviewers value reaching knowledgeable people.
  • Benefits and compliance support. Comprehensive plans and guidance.
  • Self-service portal. Available around the clock.

Criticised for

  • Higher cost. More expensive than standalone services.
  • Less flexibility. Minimal customisation in standard plans.
  • Busy-period delays. Support can be slow, with a learning curve early on.

Switching between Paychex and TriNet

Moving between a payroll provider and a PEO changes who the employer is, so plan it around a benefits renewal or a quarter start. That keeps deductibles, tax wage bases and 401(k) contributions from restarting mid-year. Ask the new provider whether it accepts year-to-date payroll history.

Paychex to TriNet

Moderate effort
  1. Get a written TriNet quote that lists the monthly fee, minimums and add-ons.
  2. Check the Paychex agreement for the term and any recovery of free months.
  3. Export payroll history, tax filings and benefits enrolments from Paychex.
  4. Expect TriNet to become the co-employer, which changes who files and holds your tax accounts.

TriNet to Paychex

High effort
  1. Ask TriNet for the notice period and any exit fees, which it does not publish.
  2. If you leave the PEO for a payroll package, you become the sole employer: set up state tax accounts and workers’ comp.
  3. Re-enrol employees in benefits and move the 401(k) plan.
  4. Confirm every employee is in the US, since Paychex lists no international service.

Final verdict

Paychex is the safer start if you want payroll first. TriNet is the better pure PEO.

Our scores tie at 4.0, so pick on structure. Paychex lets you begin with payroll and add HR Pro or a PEO later, lists SOC and ISO reports, and keeps retirement and insurance in house. Its limits are the missing price, a 3.5 support score and a steady stream of billing complaints. TriNet is a co-employment PEO for mid-sized employers that want advisers, a managed 401(k) and a partner route abroad. Its limits are the missing price, no listed security reports and a higher cost than standalone tools. Get both quotes in writing before you decide.

Paychex vs TriNet: FAQs

Is Paychex cheaper than TriNet?

It cannot be confirmed, because neither publishes a price. Paychex quotes every package and TriNet quotes a flat monthly fee per employee. The two also price different things: a Paychex payroll package is not a PEO, while TriNet’s fee is a PEO fee.

Is Paychex a PEO like TriNet?

Partly. Paychex offers payroll packages, HR Pro (a non-PEO option) and an HR PEO that adds co-employment. TriNet is a PEO first, and says a subsidiary is an IRS-certified CPEO. Ask Paychex which entity would be your co-employer.

Do Paychex or TriNet publish their prices?

No. Paychex sends visitors to a sales contact and does not publish a starting price. TriNet says it does not publish standard list pricing. Its FAQ uses $150 per employee per month as an example for 20 employees, but states that this is not a TriNet rate.

Can either hire employees outside the US?

TriNet can, through Multiplier, under separate fees and only as an add-on to its PEO. It says this covers 150+ countries. Paychex describes itself as a US provider and lists no international employment service.

Which is better for a small business?

Neither is built for the smallest teams. Paychex says its best fit is about 20 to 250 employees and a weaker fit under 10. TriNet says it mainly serves mid-sized companies. Under 10 people, a vendor with posted prices such as Gusto or Justworks is usually easier.

Which has better support?

TriNet scores slightly higher at 3.9 of 5 against 3.5 for Paychex, though neither publishes support hours. Public reviews of Paychex mention support holds, unexpected fees and difficulty closing accounts more often than praise.

Do Paychex and TriNet require long contracts?

Paychex publishes no standard minimum term, but its free-months offer needs a one-year agreement and the value can be recovered if you leave early. TriNet says most contracts have flexible terms without a long-term commitment. Neither publishes exit terms.

Which has better security and integrations?

Paychex lists SOC 1 Type 2, SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001, and names QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Xero and NetSuite. TriNet lists no certification in our review and names only QuickBooks Online. Both score 3.8 of 5 on integrations.
