Paychex vs ADP (2026): Two Quote-Only Payroll Providers Compared

ADP edges ahead on tax filing, integrations, round-the-clock support and range from 1 to 1,000+ employees. Paychex is the easier tool with in-house 401(k) and insurance. Neither publishes a price, so the real comparison is two written quotes.

HRS score is our editorial rating from the full Paychex review and ADP review. Each product is scored on eight parameters, and the two sets differ slightly.

The core difference: a payroll-and-HR suite or a payroll platform that scales up

Paychex sells four payroll packages named Basic, Foundations, Advanced and Complete, plus HR Pro, a non-PEO option with a dedicated HR professional, and an HR PEO that adds co-employment. Every package is a quote, so the usual route is a sales call, a setup fee and a one-year agreement if you take the free-months offer.

ADP splits by size. RUN serves 1 to 49 employees in four bundles, Essential, Enhanced, Complete and HR Pro, and Workforce Now serves 50 and above in Select, Plus and Premium. Both are quotes too. The real gap is less about features than about scale and depth: ADP covers a wider size range, while Paychex leans on in-house retirement, insurance and HR guidance.

Paychex: payroll first, PEO when you need it

Your company Paychex Payroll first, PEO optional Payroll HR Pro HR PEO
Strongest when you want in-house retirement, insurance and HR guidance. Weakest on price visibility, support and a thin integration catalog.

ADP: payroll that scales from 1 to 1,000+

Your company ADP RUN or Workforce Now Payroll HR Pro Add-ons
Strongest on tax compliance, integrations and support hours. Weakest on price visibility, with time tracking, benefits and some compliance tools in higher tiers or add-ons.

Paychex vs ADP pricing, and what you actually pay

Neither vendor publishes a rate. Paychex quotes four payroll packages, HR Pro and the HR PEO. ADP quotes four RUN bundles and three Workforce Now packages, with the per-employee rate set in the sales order.

That means no table can rank them on price. Both run limited free-months offers for new clients, which change the first-year cost but not the underlying rate. The useful move is to ask each for a written all-in quote at your headcount, then compare setup, add-ons, year-end forms and the renewal uplift.

Paychex: a setup fee applies and the amount is set in your quote.

ADP: not published. Only timeclock hardware installation fees are stated.

Year-end forms and add-ons

Paychex: NSF, delivery and premium processing fees can apply, and time tracking and 401(k) are billed outside payroll.

ADP: W-2 and 1099 forms carry an extra fee on Essential, with the amount unpublished. Time tracking and benefits are add-ons.

Insurance and workers’ comp

Paychex: health, dental, vision and workers’ comp through its own agency; premiums and rates are not published.

ADP: health, retirement and workers’ comp are add-ons through ADP affiliates.

Payroll taxes

Paychex: calculates, files and pays payroll taxes for you.

ADP: files federal, state and local taxes in every bundle, including W-2 and 1099 e-filing.

Feature tiers

Paychex: the package that holds each feature is not itemised in our review.

ADP: SUI management, garnishment payments and electronic I-9 start at Enhanced. HR HelpDesk and the handbook wizard start at Complete.

Plan limits

Paychex: best fit is about 20 to 250 staff; under 10 employees it is a weaker fit.

ADP: RUN runs from 1 to 49 employees, then you move to Workforce Now at 50 and over.

Contract length

Paychex: no standard minimum is published. The free-months offer needs a one-year agreement and can be recovered on early exit.

ADP: no fixed term. Either side can cancel on 30 days’ written notice.

Price changes

Paychex: no price-increase cap or notice period is published.

ADP: processing fees can rise on 30 days’ notice after a new client’s first six months.

Free trial and promotions

Where each one works

Both run payroll and offer a PEO in the United States. Neither is a clear international choice. Paychex describes itself as a US provider and lists no international service. ADP lists a global payroll product, but our review gives no country count, so treat its coverage as unconfirmed until ADP supplies a list. The grid shows what each product can do in each place, not which one is better.

Implementation and support

ADP scores 3.7 of 5 for support and Paychex 3.5, so neither is strong, but ADP has the edge on availability: its RUN bundles list a 24/7 support line while Paychex publishes no hours. Setup on both is sales-led.

Which one to pick for your situation

These are the four buying situations we see most often for this pair. Company size and how much you lean on benefits decide most of them.

12-person US restaurant with hourly staff and a POS

12 employees1 stateHourly shifts

ADP RUN lists a 24/7 support line and connects to Clover, Homebase and 7shifts. Time tracking is an add-on. Paychex says its fit is weaker under 10 and best from about 20. Get a written ADP RUN quote and check the free-months offer.

Pick ADP

150-person company that wants in-house 401(k) and insurance

150 employees3 statesBenefits-led

Paychex runs 401(k) in house for 90,000+ plans and sells health, dental, vision and workers’ comp through its own agency. ADP offers these as add-ons through affiliates. Ask Paychex for one quote that bundles payroll and benefits.

Pick Paychex

400-person group with several legal entities

400 employeesMulti-companyGrowing

ADP Workforce Now covers 50 to 999 employees and multi-company payroll is included from Essential on RUN. Paychex says its best fit tops out around 250. Ask Paychex how it would serve you, then compare the ADP quote.

Pick ADP

30-person firm that wants a named HR professional

30 employees2 statesHR-light team

Paychex HR Pro puts a dedicated HR professional on your account without co-employment. ADP HR Pro adds a CareerPlug applicant tracker and a learning system instead. If a named HR contact matters most, Paychex fits better.

Switching between Paychex and ADP

Moving between two payroll providers is easiest at the start of a quarter or a calendar year, so tax forms and year-to-date totals stay in one place. Ask the new provider whether it accepts year-to-date payroll history, and keep the old account open until the first payroll runs clean.

Paychex to ADP

Moderate effort
  1. Check the Paychex agreement for the term and any recovery of free months.
  2. Export payroll history, tax filings and reports before access ends.
  3. Move 401(k) and insurance plans, since Paychex runs them through its own agency.
  4. Time the ADP start before November 26, 2026 if you want the RUN free-months offer.

ADP to Paychex

Moderate effort
  1. Give ADP 30 days’ written notice and get a written Paychex quote first.
  2. Export payroll history and tax filings. Electronic I-9 access ends at termination, so download those records first.
  3. Check ADP’s data export terms, which it does not publish.
  4. Decide up front whether you want HR Pro or the HR PEO, because that changes the contract.

Final verdict

ADP is the stronger platform on paper. Paychex is the better fit for benefits-led teams of 20 to 250.

ADP scores 4.1 against 4.0, leads on tax filing at 4.8 of 5, lists a 24/7 support line and runs from 1 to 1,000+ employees. Its limits are no published price, tiered features and fees that can rise after month six. Paychex scores 4.0, is easier to use at 4.0 of 5 and runs 401(k) and insurance in house. Its limits are the missing price, a 3.5 support score and a thin integration catalog. This is a close call, and the gap in price will not show until you hold two quotes in writing.

Paychex vs ADP: FAQs

Is Paychex cheaper than ADP?

It cannot be confirmed, because neither publishes a price. Paychex quotes four payroll packages plus HR Pro and an HR PEO. ADP quotes four RUN bundles and three Workforce Now packages. Ask both for a written all-in quote at your headcount.

Does ADP publish its prices?

No. ADP does not publish a rate for any RUN bundle or Workforce Now package, and the setup fee is unpublished except for timeclock installation. Paychex also publishes no price, so you need two quotes.

Which is better for a small business?

It depends on the team. ADP RUN covers 1 to 49 employees with a 24/7 support line, and Paychex says its best fit is about 20 to 250 and a weaker fit under 10. For very small teams, Gusto Simple at $49 plus $6 a person is worth a look.

Which is better for a growing company?

ADP has the wider range, moving from RUN to Workforce Now for 50 to 999 and 1,000+ employees. Paychex fits roughly 20 to 250 and offers an HR PEO as a step up. If you expect to pass 250, ask Paychex how it would serve you.

Is ADP or Paychex a PEO?

Both offer PEO services. Paychex has an HR PEO package and HR Pro as a non-PEO option. ADP runs a separate PEO that paid 775,000 worksite employees at June 30, 2026, though it sits outside our review.

Can either hire employees outside the US?

Neither is a clear answer. Paychex describes itself as a US provider. ADP lists a global payroll product, but our review gives no country count, so confirm coverage with ADP before relying on it.

Which has better support?

ADP has the edge on availability, with a 24/7 line on all four RUN bundles and a support score of 3.7 of 5. Paychex scores 3.5 and publishes no hours. Both draw complaints in public reviews, so ask about escalation in writing.

Do Paychex and ADP require long contracts?

ADP has no fixed term and either side can cancel on 30 days’ written notice, though processing fees can rise on 30 days’ notice after the first six months. Paychex publishes no standard minimum, but its free-months offer needs a one-year agreement.
